OUR HISTORY
The origin of Hepatopancreatobiliary Association Kenya
HPBAK was birthed out of a desire to formalize HPB care as a distinct sub-specialty area in Kenya. The local executive committee organized a landmark national launch and outreach project from March 2–4, 2016, in Nairobi.
The launch featured prominent international figures, including:
- Professor Martin Smith (then-President of E-AHPBA and Acting Secretary General of IHPBA)
- Professor Eduard Jonas (then-E-AHPBA council member)
During this historic 3-day workshop, the visiting professors alongside local teams performed several highly complex, major HPB surgical operations. The efficiency, organization, and infrastructural capabilities demonstrated by the Kenyan team earned immense praise from the IHPBA, setting a firm foundation for ongoing international support, outreach programs, and educational grants.
